The raw material for GMT block pallets is primarily made from GMT, which stands for Glass Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics. It is a composite material consisting of a thermoplastic resin matrix reinforced with long glass fibers or continuous glass fiber mats.
The GMT material used in block pallet mainly comes from scrapped automotive parts such as headliners, door panels, rear panels, seat backs, load-bearing panels, and other interior materials of cars.
Lightweight GMT block pallet have expandable properties. After mixing polypropylene and long glass fiber semi-finished products through three types of mixing equipment, the temperature, pressure, and gap of the compounding machine can be controlled to produce lightweight GMT block pallet of different densities.
Â
Thermoplasticity and recyclability of lightweight GMT block pallet:
- - The thermoplasticity is based on the polypropylene resin matrix of lightweight GMT block pallet.
- - The off-cuts produced during the manufacturing process of lightweight GMT block pallet can be recycled through mixing equipment.
- - The off-cuts and waste material from sheet compounding and molding can be crushed or granulated for use in glass fiber reinforced polypropylene granules.
GMT material is favored in the automotive industry for its high specific strength, lightweight components, recyclability, environmental friendliness, reduced material consumption, and the ability to reuse off-cuts and waste, thus lowering costs. GMT materials have been widely used in the automotive industry abroad since the 1990s.

Advantages of GMT materials include:
- Strength: High strength and rigidity of lightweight GMT sheets, resistant to damage even under vehicle pressure.
- Impact Toughness: Good impact toughness and elasticity, making it suitable for car trunks, shelves, new type floor mats, air conditioning channels, bottom protection plates in business and passenger vehicles. It's also durable and robust when made into block pallets.
- Odor: Below 100°C, lightweight GMT has almost no odor.
- Environmental Friendliness: As a thermoplastic material, lightweight GMT is recyclable and non-polluting.
- Weight: Lightweight GMT has a small mass per unit area, reducing the weight of interior components. For example, a car's hat rack that needs 2400g/m2 in hemp fiber board only requires 1500-1700g/m2 in lightweight GMT.
- Heat Resistance: The heat resistance of lightweight GMT sheets is 92-100°C, with a lifespan of up to 10 years, making it suitable for hot regions. In most parts of Africa, where it is dry and hot, wooden and bamboo glue pallets don't last long.
- Moisture and Mold Resistance: wood block pallet easily absorb moisture and are prone to mold in rainy tropical rainforests and during the rainy season. They can deform due to moisture absorption when used as block pallet. Lightweight GMT block pallet do not have issues with moisture absorption and mold.
